Sydney, Jan 31 (NationPress) Authorities in Australia have issued a significant flood alert for the northeastern region of the country.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) released a severe weather advisory on Friday, highlighting heavy rainfall risks for communities along a 400-kilometre coastal stretch in far north Queensland.
Residents in the impacted areas have been advised to brace for rainfall amounts reaching up to half a metre and the potential for flooding.
"Intensely heavy rainfall and significant, potentially life-threatening flash flooding are anticipated," noted Miriam Bradbury from the BoM.
"These regions have already experienced substantial rainfall this week, and additional precipitation is expected to exacerbate flash flooding conditions."
Between Cairns and Townsville, the two largest cities in far north Queensland, rainfall amounts are projected to be between 300 and 500 millimetres from Friday night through Sunday.
Shane Chelepy, Queensland's State Disaster Coordinator, mentioned at a press conference that flood preparedness measures are currently in progress.
He urged residents in the affected zones to establish a disaster plan, ensure they have adequate food and fuel supplies, and keep their electronic devices charged, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
"The most crucial action they can take is to stay updated with our communications," Chelepy emphasized.
Chris Watts, the area controller for the State Emergency Service, stated that emergency teams have been preparing flood boats and storm damage tools.
He advised residents in flood-prone areas to be ready for possible evacuation.
The BoM reported that regions along Queensland's north tropical coast received up to 800 millimetres of rain in the past week.
This heavy rainfall has been caused by three tropical low systems developing off the coast of Queensland.
