New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) As the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm DeepSeek continues to disrupt the tech landscape amid the US-China trade conflict, OpenAI has raised suspicions regarding the possibility that ChatGPT data has been covertly utilized by DeepSeek to develop its economical AI models.

The OpenAI team, led by Sam Altman, disclosed to the Financial Times that they uncovered indications suggesting DeepSeek might have employed a method known as “distillation,” a prevalent technique among developers for training AI models by sourcing data from extensive language models (LLMs).

Currently, OpenAI and Microsoft are investigating whether their APIs were exploited by the Chinese competitor to enhance DeepSeek’s own AI frameworks.

It is reported that OpenAI invested approximately $100 million in training its GPT-4 model.

As stated by David Sacks, who served as the AI advisor to former US President Donald Trump, “it is possible” that intellectual property theft has taken place concerning DeepSeek.

“There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled knowledge out of OpenAI models and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this,” Sacks remarked in an interview with Fox News.

In an official statement, OpenAI remarked, “We are aware that companies based in the PRC (China) — among others — are continuously attempting to distill the models created by leading US AI firms.”

In another development, Euroconsumers, a coalition of consumer advocacy groups in Europe, lodged a complaint with the Italian Data Protection Authority concerning DeepSeek’s management of personal data under GDPR regulations.

The Italian DPA has indicated that “the data of millions of Italians is at risk” and has allotted DeepSeek a timeframe of 20 days to provide a response.

DeepSeek receives backing from High-Flyer Capital Management, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund, co-founded by AI enthusiast Liang Wenfeng in 2015.

Additionally, DeepSeek's Android application has surged to the top position on the Google Play Store. This application serves as an alternative to ChatGPT and operates on the Chinese lab’s V3 model.
