Canberra, Feb 4 (NationPress) A man has been hospitalised in a critical condition following a shooting in what appears to be a targeted attack in northern Australia.

Authorities in the Northern Territory (NT) reported that officers were dispatched to the scene of the incident in the northern Darwin suburb of Coconut Grove just after 7 p.m. local time on Monday.

Emergency medical teams arrived and provided care to a 23-year-old male who had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was subsequently transported to a nearby medical facility, where he remained in critical condition, awaiting surgical intervention on Tuesday morning, according to Xinhua news agency.

A representative from the ambulance service informed News Corp Australia that the victim was shot with a shotgun and had incurred pellet injuries to both of his legs.

NT Police took into custody two men, aged 19 and 22, along with a 22-year-old woman in connection to the shooting at approximately 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday in Katherine, located 270 kilometers southeast of Darwin.

Duty Superintendent Tanya Mace stated in a press briefing that law enforcement believes the suspects were acquainted with the victim.

"We believe this was a targeted attack and at no point were any members of the public in danger," she remarked.

Witnesses informed News Corp that the assailants emerged from a vehicle before opening fire on the victim.

Mace added that the forensic team would investigate the scene along with the vehicle used by the suspects at the time of their apprehension.

In an earlier incident in December 2024, a shooting in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, resulted in one fatality and two injuries.

Officers were summoned to a location in Campbellfield, approximately 15 km north of central Melbourne, at 10:10 p.m. local time on a Friday night following reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, they discovered a 60-year-old man suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries.
