Sydney, Feb 8 (NationPress) Authorities in Sydney have initiated an inquiry following the admission of a teenager to a hospital with a gunshot injury.

Officers from New South Wales (NSW), Australia, reported on Saturday that they were summoned to a medical facility in Bankstown, located approximately 18 km southwest of central Sydney, on Friday night after a 17-year-old male arrived in the emergency department with a gunshot wound to his right leg.

The 17-year-old, whose injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, was accompanied by an 18-year-old individual. Both refused to provide assistance to the police during their inquiries, according to NSW Police.

When police attempted to detain the 18-year-old for concealing a crime, he reportedly assaulted two officers, resulting in one being injured.

This individual was taken to a local police station, where he allegedly made several threats towards law enforcement officials.

The 18-year-old now faces six charges, which include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and three counts of intimidating a police officer.

Authorities have confiscated a vehicle believed to have been used by the two males to reach the hospital and have commenced an investigation into the shooting incident, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Any individuals with knowledge regarding this occurrence are encouraged to reach out to the police.

Earlier this week, law enforcement in South Australia (SA) announced the formation of a new task force aimed at tackling violent crimes perpetrated by youth gangs.

SA Police revealed the establishment of the Youth and Street Gangs Task Force on Wednesday, as part of an increase in police resources dedicated to addressing youth crime, domestic and family violence, cybercrime, and retail theft.

Commissioner Grant Stevens stated that this new task force will not only respond to crimes but also engage in preventive and rehabilitative efforts.

“Youth crime involves not just criminal acts, but also the recruitment of younger individuals, thus this task force aims to break this cycle,” he stated in an announcement.

“This permanent task force will disrupt and diminish the criminal activities of targeted offenders, with a particular emphasis on violent crimes that significantly threaten community safety.”

The task force has been formed by integrating two existing police operations and adding 13 officers to its team.

Recent data from SA Police, released earlier this January, indicated that crimes committed by offenders aged 10-17 surged by 140 percent, rising from 6,938 in 2018-19 to 16,710 in 2023-24.
