Rome, March 13 (NationPress) Italian agricultural products are poised to experience greater repercussions than those from any other European nations if the anticipated US tariffs are enacted next month, according to a recent study.

The Confederation of Italian Farmers, known as CIA-Agricoltori Italiani, reported on Wednesday that Italian agricultural exports to the US surpassed those of other European countries, as noted by Xinhua news agency.

According to CIA-Agricoltori Italiani, Italy's exports amounted to 7.8 billion euros (approximately $8.5 billion) last year, representing around 12 percent of Italy's total agricultural exports. This percentage exceeds France's 6.7 percent, Spain's 4.7 percent, and Germany's 2.5 percent of agricultural exports to the US.

Italy also enjoyed an overall trade surplus with the US last year of 39 billion euros. The US stands out as the leading non-EU market for Italian products, second only to Germany overall.

Cristiano Fini, the national president of CIA-Agricoltori Italiani, urged for diplomatic measures to prevent the implementation of the impending US tariffs, which are set to take effect on April 2.

Fini stated, “Strong diplomatic action is essential to reach a resolution,” emphasizing, “Italy can and must take the lead in Europe in negotiating with US President Donald Trump, as we have the most to lose.”

The CIA-Agricoltori Italiani highlighted that the regions of Tuscany and Sardinia in Italy would be the most adversely affected by these levies, particularly high-end exports such as wine, pecorino cheese, and olive oil.
