Bengaluru, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has strongly criticized Congress leaders for targeting Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot over his refusal to sign the Ordinance aimed at regulating microfinancing institutions (MFIs) that have been causing distress to farmers. They asserted that instead of making reckless comments, Congress should prioritize the management of their respective departments.

Minister for Agriculture, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, claimed that despite holding a Constitutional position, Governor Gehlot behaves like a spokesperson for the BJP.

He urged that the Governor should remain politically neutral concerning the Ordinance designed to curb the abusive practices of MFIs and deliver justice to the citizens.

The Governor has declined to approve the Karnataka Micro Loan and Small Loan (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Ordinance, 2025.

In response, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, R. Ashoka, criticized Minister Cheluvarayaswamy’s remarks against the Governor, highlighting that “Since the Congress government assumed office, over 3,000 farmers in the state have taken their own lives in the past 20 months, yet you seem indifferent.”

“The Governor has justly pointed out that the current legal framework is sufficient to oversee microfinance entities. What is objectionable about that? If your government harbors concerns regarding the Governor’s comments, you ought to communicate directly with him or seek a meeting for clarification. Resorting to unnecessary political attacks and accusing him of being a BJP representative is utterly inappropriate,” Ashoka remarked.

“The nation is fully aware of how Governors operated during the Congress’s tenure at the Centre. Instead of indulging in such futile statements and squandering time, concentrate on efficiently managing your department. Tackle the issues faced by farmers and execute your responsibilities with diligence. That is the way to honor the trust bestowed by the voters,” he emphasized.

“Rather than making reckless remarks in front of the media, you should devote some time to managing your department. Are you even aware of which department you oversee, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy? You appear to be in a quandary—whether to align with CM Siddaramaiah or Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar,” Ashoka alleged.

“Given your uncertainty about keeping your position amid a potential Cabinet overhaul or a change in the Chief Minister, it’s unsurprising that you’ve lost sight of your department and responsibilities,” he criticized.

“Farmers are being compelled to suicide due to the harassment from microfinance companies. Instead of addressing their concerns, you have not even shown the basic courtesy of visiting the affected families in your own district. Recently, I personally visited the family of Prema and her son Ranjith, who tragically lost their lives in Konnapura village, Malavalli taluk, Mandya district. I extended my condolences and provided personal financial support of Rs 1 lakh. It was only afterward that you acknowledged the issue,” Ashoka highlighted.
