New Delhi, April 24 (NationPress) The Congress party on Thursday vehemently condemned the Central government's handling of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a significant intelligence failure and accusing the BJP of leveraging this tragedy for political advantage by fostering hatred through their official channels.
Senior Congress figure Ghulam Ahmad Mir voiced grave concerns regarding the escalating incidence of terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
In an interview with IANS, Mir stated: "It’s clear that Jammu and Kashmir remains a troubled area. In spite of the government's assertions regarding the restoration of peace over the past six to seven years, we are still seeing assaults in Rajouri, Reasi, Kathua, and now Pahalgam."
Emphasizing the strategic significance and constant security presence in Pahalgam, particularly during the annual Amarnath Yatra, Mir questioned how such an audacious attack could occur.
“Pahalgam is one of the most secured locations. It witnesses frequent movements of VVIPs, senior officials, and security personnel. The presence of the army, CRPF, and sensitive units of the J&K Police makes it astonishing that terrorists could operate with such ease. This is a major intelligence failure," he remarked.
He underscored the necessity for a more comprehensive security strategy that encompasses tourist areas like Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, and Baisaran.
“These are spots where families enjoy the snow even until July. Why were there no additional security measures, especially during the bustling tourist season?" Mir questioned.
He also pointed out that while the Central government has proposed actions in light of the attack, the efficacy of these initiatives remains uncertain.
“The Indian government must guarantee that every city, every tourist hotspot, and every citizen feels secure. A more profound evaluation of the overall security strategy is essential," he added.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also commented, labeling the event a blatant security oversight.
“Pahalgam is safeguarded by a three-tier security framework. Nevertheless, this dreadful attack transpired. Given that it is a Union Territory, the accountability falls squarely on the Union Home Minister," he stated.
Khera also paid tribute to the bravery of locals, particularly a pony ride operator who lost his life while attempting to protect tourists.
He criticized the BJP’s reaction to the incident, stating: "We denounce the manner in which the BJP’s official channels are utilizing this tragic occurrence to incite communal hatred and gain political leverage."
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar shared similar views, urging citizens to remain composed and united.
"This incident took place in a sensitive region that necessitated robust military deployment. The accountability lies with the Prime Minister and the Home Ministry to ensure national security," she remarked.
"I express deep sorrow for the victims and their families and pray for a swift recovery for the injured. The Congress party is committed to supporting initiatives for peace and security at all levels," she concluded.
