Imphal/Agartala, Feb 4 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has called upon the Central government to take immediate action to remove Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and to initiate comprehensive dialogue with all parties involved in the ongoing conflict. This is essential to ensure that the rights of all communities are protected and to restore peace and normalcy.
Ahead of the CPI-M’s 24th party Congress, scheduled for April 2 to 6 in Madurai, the Left party released its draft political resolution, analyzing the troubling situation in Manipur, which has faced severe ethnic violence since May 2023.
The draft resolution, adopted during the Central Committee meeting from January 17-19 in Kolkata, points out that even after twenty months since the ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, conditions remain alarming.
“Despicable acts including arson, rape, kidnapping, and murder of innocent individuals have occurred. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of 250 individuals, with 60,000 displaced persons currently residing in camps. Both the BJP governments at the state and central levels have failed to restore normalcy and peace in the region,” states the resolution.
It further mentions that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not made a single visit to Manipur, and Chief Minister Biren Singh remains in position despite widespread discontent regarding his “partisan role” in the crisis.
The Left party remarked that besides the delayed deployment of security forces, there have been no significant measures taken to foster dialogue with the affected communities, political parties, and various ethnic groups involved in the dispute.
“This inaction from the Central government has obstructed the rebuilding of trust among the populace and the establishment of conditions necessary for peace and unity. The Centre appears unaware of the severe repercussions of its negligence, which could exacerbate the conflict in Manipur and jeopardize peace throughout the entire northeastern region,” the CPI-M draft resolution stated.
The CPI-M, along with other Left parties, is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc in Manipur.
Following the onset of the ethnic violence in Manipur, senior leaders from the CPI-M, including Central Committee member Jitendra Chaudhury, visited various affected areas.
Chaudhury, who is also the CPI-M Tripura state Secretary and Leader of Opposition in the state, alleged that “the ethnic violence in the northeastern state forms part of the BJP-RSS strategy to create division among the populace across the nation.”
