New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) As India ventures into its dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Sam Altman, Co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, emphasized on Wednesday that India represents a crucial market for AI, being the company's second largest globally.

Altman, the architect behind ChatGPT AI models, spoke at an event attended by Union Minister for Railways and Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw.

He recently unveiled a significant $500 billion initiative named 'Stargate', aimed at developing new AI infrastructure in the US in collaboration with SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX over the next four years. He stated that India has the potential to lead in the race for advanced AI models.

"India is an essential market for AI. It ranks as our second largest global market. While models remain costly, they are feasible. Naturally, India should take the lead in this area," he commented during the gathering.

He also clarified that his previous remarks regarding India's capability to create large language models (LLMs) were misinterpreted.

Minister Vaishnaw noted that young innovators in India are dedicated to achieving the next level of innovation that will lower costs, drawing parallels to the successful Chandrayaan mission. He questioned, "If we can achieve that, why not in the LLM sector?"

Last month, the minister announced that India is poised to launch its own secure and indigenous AI model within six months at a reasonable price.

This Indian AI model aims to establish the country as a more dependable technological leader in providing ethical AI solutions in the future. The IndiaAI mission is progressing towards customizing indigenous AI solutions tailored for the local context, utilizing Indian languages, supported by a state-of-the-art common computing facility.

Various scientists, researchers, developers, and coders are actively working on multiple foundational models, with the Union Minister expressing optimism that the Indian AI model could be ready in about six months.

The AI initiative will commence with a computational resource of approximately 10,000 GPUs, with an additional 8,693 GPUs to be integrated soon. Initially, this will greatly benefit researchers, students, and developers. The government plans to offer access to users for less than Rs 100 per GPU, having subsidized 40% of the cost.

In comparison, global models charge between $2.5 to $3 per hour, while India's AI model will be available for under Rs 100 per hour post-subsidy.

This pricing is nearly nine times less than what the open-source model DeepSeek from China offers and about two-thirds of the cost of ChatGPT.
