New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The voting process is currently taking place across all 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi on Wednesday, with stringent security measures in effect. Voting commenced at 7 am and will end at 6 pm, with officials tasked with ensuring a seamless and tranquil election.
The Election Commission has established comprehensive security protocols, deploying 220 companies of paramilitary forces, 35,626 personnel from the Delhi Police, and 19,000 Home Guards.
Approximately 3,000 polling booths have been classified as sensitive, leading to additional security enhancements, including drone monitoring.
Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been stationed in at-risk areas to address any potential law-and-order issues.
The 70 constituencies, which span various districts of the capital, showcase the city's diverse population. Among these, 12 seats are reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Caste.
The results, set to be announced on February 8, will determine if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues its reign, whether the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) makes a comeback, or if the Congress re-establishes itself.
This election features several prominent candidates, including AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, contesting from New Delhi, and Chief Minister Atishi, who is running from Kalkaji.
Key AAP candidates also include former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia from Jangpura, Satyendra Jain from Shakur Basti, Awadh Ojha from Patparganj, Somnath Bharti from Malviya Nagar, and Amanatullah Khan from Okhla.
The Congress party has nominated Alka Lamba from Kalkaji and Sandeep Dikshit from New Delhi, as it seeks to regain its foothold in the national capital.
On the other hand, the BJP has fielded candidates like Parvesh Verma (New Delhi), Ramesh Bidhuri (Kalkaji), Arvinder Singh Lovely (Gandhi Nagar), Kapil Mishra (Karawal Nagar), and Kailash Gahlot (Bijwasan).
The AAP's campaign has been led by Kejriwal, CM Atishi, Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, while the BJP relied on prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief J.P. Nadda.
The Congress' efforts have been fronted by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress MP from Wayanad, as the party attempts a resurgence in the region.
The elections are centered around critical issues such as the 'Sheesh Mahal' controversy, pollution, concerns regarding the quality of Yamuna water, road conditions, allegations of voter list manipulation, as well as rising crime and gang violence in Delhi.
In the previous Assembly elections held in 2020, the AAP achieved a remarkable victory, claiming 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP secured only eight.
The Congress, which once held sway in Delhi politics for 15 years, failed to win a single seat for the second consecutive term.
