DMK to Participate in Erode (East) Assembly By-Election Set for February 5
Chennai, Jan 11 (NationPress) The ruling party of Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), is set to participate in the Erode (East) Assembly by-election on February 5, following the Congress party's decision to transfer the constituency to its senior partner.

Chennai, Jan 11 (NationPress) The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, is preparing to contest the Erode (East) Assembly by-election scheduled for February 5. This follows the Congress party, which previously held the seat, opting to pass the constituency to its senior ally.

According to a statement by K Selvaperunthagai, the chief of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, "With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching in just 10 months, Chief Minister and leader of the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has made this decision at the request of the Congress party. After comprehensive discussions with Congress leadership, it has been established that a DMK candidate will run in the Erode (East) Assembly by-election."

“We are committed to working collaboratively to secure a significant victory for the DMK candidate, aiming to uphold the Indian Constitution and fortify democracy in our nation. Our focus will be on ensuring the DMK candidate wins with a substantial vote margin,” Selvaperunthagai emphasized.

This upcoming election marks the second by-election within two years for the Erode East Assembly constituency, which became vacant following the passing of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan on December 14, 2024.

Elangovan, a grandnephew of the esteemed social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, was elected in a by-election earlier in 2023.

He contested this election after the sudden death of his son, Thirumagan Everaa, who tragically passed away from a heart attack in January 2023 at the age of 46.

Chief Minister and DMK President M. K. Stalin visited the Erode district on December 19 and 20, 2024, to bolster the party’s presence in anticipation of the upcoming by-poll and the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The DMK has ambitious plans, aiming to secure 200 out of 234 Assembly seats in the 2026 elections.
