New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has unveiled a pioneering collaboration with Blue Dart, a prominent express logistics provider, to introduce an urban logistics service, marking a remarkable first in the entire South Asia Pacific region.
The DMRC and Blue Dart have formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at facilitating urban freight (cargo) services utilizing metro trains. This initiative leverages the metro's infrastructure to enhance cargo transport while simultaneously alleviating road congestion and minimizing emissions.
"This service represents a strategic alliance between DMRC and Blue Dart, India’s leading express logistics service provider. This innovative initiative, unprecedented in the South Asia Pacific region, underscores both DMRC and Blue Dart’s dedication to environmental responsibility and the promotion of sustainable logistics solutions," stated DMRC.
As part of this initiative, Blue Dart will employ metro trains during non-peak hours to carry cargo, ensuring quicker and more dependable movement of time-sensitive deliveries. This initiative will not only optimize DMRC's operational resources but also significantly reduce vehicular emissions by lessening reliance on road transport.
"Internationally, metro systems are increasingly seeking ways to utilize spare capacity to generate revenue while advancing sustainability. For example, Madrid Metro has launched a pilot project with logistic partners to transport packages via metro trains, thus reducing road traffic and pollution. DMRC is actively collaborating with Madrid Metro to share insights and best practices in urban freight logistics," the statement elaborated.
By integrating first-mile and last-mile connectivity with metro-enabled logistics solutions and Micro Parcel Hubs, the project aims to enhance supply chain efficiency while tackling urban pollution. DMRC is capitalizing on its extensive station network and tracks to create a sustainable urban freight network across Delhi-NCR.
DMRC further highlighted that overcoming operational challenges and adopting global best practices will be vital for enhancing urban cargo movement. This partnership is designed to improve operational efficiency, reduce delivery times, and support eco-friendly freight systems by converting metro premises into logistics hubs.
In alignment with its long-term vision, DMRC intends to expand this cargo network to additional metro stations, establishing new standards in sustainable and seamless freight transportation.
"With this groundbreaking model, DMRC and Blue Dart will transform urban logistics by merging sustainability with innovation, ensuring a greener and more efficient future for cargo movement in metropolitan areas," the statement concluded.
