New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) Renowned social activist Anna Hazare stated on Saturday that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is facing difficulties in the Delhi Assembly elections due to their malicious intentions and errors.
He highlighted the controversy surrounding the liquor policy as a critical reason for their poor performance, adding that AAP's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has become notorious due to the liquor policy issue and his avarice.
As counting commenced, preliminary results show that the BJP is poised for a remarkable resurgence, overtaking AAP, which had previously relegated BJP to single-digit results in the last elections but is now experiencing a significant downturn.
The current term of the AAP government faced considerable backlash over corruption allegations linked to the now-repealed liquor policy, with BJP accusing Kejriwal's administration of transforming Delhi into a city of inebriates following the introduction of 'Buy 1 Get 1 free' liquor bottle promotions.
In comments to reporters regarding the early election trends, Hazare remarked, "Due to the liquor policy and their desire for wealth, Kejriwal has become infamous."
"The public has recognized that while he (Kejriwal) preaches integrity, he simultaneously endorses liquor. This contradiction has resulted in fewer votes for him in the elections," he further noted.
Addressing the accusations against Kejriwal and other senior AAP figures, Anna Hazare stated, "In the realm of politics, claims and counterclaims are prevalent. However, when confronted with allegations, it is vital to prove their falsehood to the public. The truth endures, while falsehoods do not. Therefore, pursuing the truth is crucial in these situations."
"Kejriwal has become self-serving and has failed to recognize it. He has strayed onto the wrong path and is headed for a downfall," he added.
Meanwhile, the BJP is leading with 46 seats, while AAP is trailing with 24 seats, as per the preliminary trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI). In the New Delhi Assembly seat—featuring a contest among AAP's national convener and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, BJP's Parvesh Verma, and Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit—Kejriwal is currently lagging, with Verma in the lead in what is described as a competitive battle.
Prominent AAP candidates, including Atishi from Kalkaji and Saurabh Bhardwaj from Greater Kailash, are also reported to be behind BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri and Sikha Rai, respectively.
As counting progresses, the final results of the Delhi Assembly elections are highly anticipated, with significant repercussions for the future political scenario of the national capital.
