Bhopal, Jan 22 (NationPress) The initiative to ensure the settlement of dues for nearly 8,000 workers from the inactive JC Mill in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior has reached its concluding phase, according to a statement from the government.
This announcement followed a review meeting led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav during his recent visit to Gwalior. Attendees included Gwalior District in-charge and Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat, Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar, senior district administration officials, representatives of the mill workers, and others.
“The state government has previously addressed the concerns of workers from Hukumchand Mill in Indore and Vinod Mill in Ujjain. The dues for JC Mill workers will be settled promptly. The resolution process has reached the final stage,” stated the Chief Minister.
He further mentioned that the committee tasked with resolving the JC Mill situation has commenced the evaluation of dues based on both old and new claims, and has presented this assessment to the High Court without delay.
The CM also directed Additional Chief Secretary Rajesh Rajoura and Principal Secretary for Industries Raghvendra Singh to give priority to actions related to the workers’ payments.
It is noteworthy that after inspecting JC Mills in Gwalior in November 2024, Chief Minister Yadav had announced that the state government would petition the High Court to deliver justice to the over 8,000 laborers from the mill, which has been closed for the past 40 years.
Hukumchand Mill, one of the largest mills in Indore, was shut down by its management in 1991 without prior notice, affecting around 6,000 workers at the time. These workers engaged in a prolonged struggle for their pending salaries, gratuity, and other dues.
During the Tuesday meeting, Chief Minister Yadav also assessed the resolution process concerning the Sugar Mill in Morena, which has been inactive since 2011. The Morena sugar factory, also known as the Kailaras sugar mill, was founded in 1973 but ceased operations between 2010-2011 due to financial losses attributed to a lack of sugarcane and working capital.
Importantly, the state government plans to rejuvenate the Kailaras Sugar Mill. A revival plan has been formulated, which includes selling approximately 27 hectares of land to settle debts owed to farmers and workers. The Department of Industry has been assigned the responsibility of initiating bids and selling the land.
On Wednesday, the auction process for the Kailaras Sugar Mill was halted following a significant protest organized by farmers from the Morena district.
