Sambhal, Feb 21 (NationPress) The Sambhal Police have submitted a charge sheet against 124 individuals relating to six cases of rioting that occurred in November of the previous year.
The suspects face charges for assaulting police officers and administrative officials amid the turmoil.
During a press briefing on Friday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishan Bishnoi stressed that no kind of violence or breach of law would be accepted.
He affirmed that strict measures would be implemented against those proven guilty, yet emphasized that arrests would not be made solely on the basis of suspicion—only substantial evidence would justify police action.
The charge sheet details how the accused allegedly plotted to incite violence on November 24 of the last year.
As per SP Bishnoi, initially, 36 individuals were identified, but further investigations uncovered the involvement of 123 additional people. To date, 80 arrests have been made, he reported.
Evidence, including CCTV footage and testimonies from previously apprehended individuals, purportedly ties the suspects to the event. Several of the accused reportedly confessed to participating in the mob after being summoned by others involved.
A significant breakthrough in the probe has been the recovery of weapons from the suspects. "Alarmingly, some of the retrieved cartridges seem to have been produced in Pakistan," SP Bishnoi disclosed.
The police have reiterated their commitment to conducting a comprehensive and impartial investigation, asserting that actions will be taken strictly based on evidence.
A charge sheet against Sambhal MP Ziaur Rahman Barq is also anticipated soon, as investigators await critical data from his WhatsApp account. Once this information is obtained, formal charges will be filed in court.
The violent disturbances, which erupted following a court directive for a survey of Sambhal’s Shahi Masjid—amid allegations that the mosque was constructed after the demolition of a Hindu temple—resulted in extensive unrest.
Protesters reportedly hurled stones at police officers and opened fire, resulting in four fatalities and numerous injuries. Instances of arson and vandalism were also recorded during the turmoil.
