New Delhi, Dec 22 (NationPress) In a significant development for travelers and air passengers, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has unveiled the 'Udaan Yatri Cafe', a food outlet at the airport aimed at providing basic necessities such as food and water at affordable prices. This pioneering initiative will debut at Kolkata airport on a trial basis, with plans for broader implementation if it proves successful, overseen by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
This announcement comes shortly after AAP MP Raghav Chadha raised concerns regarding the inflated prices of food and beverages at airports during a parliamentary session, urging for corrective measures to make air travel more economical.
With the introduction of the first 'Udaan Yatri Cafe' at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, air passengers will benefit from reasonably priced essential items including water bottles, tea, coffee, and snacks.
The Rajya Sabha MP has praised this initiative and expressed optimism that such facilities will be established at other airports throughout the country.
"Finally, the government has responded to the demands of the common man. While this initiative starts at Kolkata Airport, I am hopeful it will extend to all airports across the nation. This will prevent air travelers from having to pay between Rs 100-250 for basic items like water, tea, or coffee," stated Chadha.
He underscored the importance of affordable amenities at airports for the convenience of the general populace.
During the Winter session of Parliament, Raghav Chadha highlighted the exorbitant prices for water, tea, and snacks at airports, shedding light on their negative impact on everyday citizens.
In his address, the RS MP illustrated the struggles of passengers who are compelled to pay steep prices for food and drinks at airports.
"A water bottle costs Rs 100, and tea is priced at Rs 200-250. Why can't the government set up affordable canteens at airports?" he questioned. He also criticized the poor management of airports, comparing them to bus stands due to the long lines, overcrowding, and lack of organization.
His concerns regarding high prices at airports resonated strongly on social media, with many commending him as a 'voice for the common man'.
Chadha also expressed worry about the recent surge in airfares, which he said starkly contradicts the government’s commitment to making air travel affordable for all citizens.
"The government assured that people in slippers would be able to fly, yet now even those wearing Bata shoes find air travel unaffordable," he remarked.
"A ticket to the Maldives costs Rs 17,000, but a ticket to Lakshadweep, promoted by the government as a tourist destination, is priced at Rs 25,000," he pointed out.
