Los Angeles, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Dallas Mavericks' recent choice to trade one of the league's elite players, Luka Doncic, to the Los Angeles Lakers for arguably the best defender in the game, Anthony Davis, has caused significant upheaval across the NBA. The Slovenian star, who had expressed his desire to remain with the Mavericks for his entire career, admitted that discovering the news was a major surprise.

Doncic shared that, like many of his NBA peers, he too was taken aback upon hearing he had been traded, humorously noting that he thought it might be an April Fools prank at his age of 25.

“It was a major shock. It was a tough moment for me. I had to verify if it was April 1 (But now) I get to play for the greatest club in the world, and I’m thrilled about this new chapter. I believed I would spend my entire career there. Loyalty means a lot to me.. But I have the ocean here. I get to represent the Lakers. Not many can claim that,” Doncic stated during his inaugural press conference as a Laker.

Fans in Dallas have expressed outrage since the announcement, questioning the management for letting go of a talent like Doncic.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is reported to have orchestrated the trade, asserting that Davis’s inclusion enhances their championship prospects, as defense is crucial for winning titles.

Davis also addressed the media on Tuesday and confessed his own surprise given the lack of communication prior to the trade.

“I was taken aback. I had no idea. I was actually at home, preparing to watch a movie with my wife when I received the call. I was completely unaware….Now I’ve processed it and am focusing on playing with Dallas,” Davis told reporters.

Currently, Doncic is sidelined due to a strained left calf sustained during the Mavericks' Christmas Day game against the Timberwolves. He played just 16 minutes before suffering the injury and has not returned since, participating in only 22 of the 49 games for the Mavericks this season.

“Honestly, the initial phase was challenging. The first day was particularly tough. It felt like these last 48 hours stretched into a month. Emotionally, it was very hard, but today has been much better. I’m just really pleased to be here for this chance. This is the Lakers. It’s one of the most prestigious clubs in history, so I’m eager to be a part of it,” Doncic concluded.
