Dubai, Feb 21 (NationPress) After Shubman Gill achieved an unbeaten century that propelled India to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Group A match of the Champions Trophy, former Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla praised the opener's strategic mindset, emphasizing that he has a keen sense of when to temper his aggression and play with responsibility.

The Indian opener maintained his excellent form, scoring 101 not out off 129 balls, featuring nine boundaries and two sixes. This innings marked Gill's slowest ODI century as he faced challenging conditions against the Bangladesh bowlers on a sluggish pitch.

"It was a remarkable innings since it wasn't the easiest surface to bat on. Chasing around 230 runs on such a pitch requires someone to see the innings through, and that’s precisely what Shubman Gill accomplished. A player of his caliber, especially in his current form, understands when to hold back and act prudently. That quality makes him vital for the Indian squad. He is aware of the situation and the team's needs at all times," Chawla remarked on JioHotstar.

While chasing 229, Gill played a crucial role in stabilizing India's innings, forming a significant partnership of 87 runs with KL Rahul (41 not out) after the dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel.

"There were moments when he refrained from hitting boundaries, focusing instead on rotating the strike with singles and doubles, which was exactly what the team required at that time. This shows the maturity of a seasoned player.

"As the vice-captain, expectations are high for him to take on that role, and he rose to the occasion. At one point, India faced a precarious situation with several wickets down. However, his ability to anchor the innings and remain until the end was truly impressive," he added.

This victory in Dubai elevates India to the second position in Group A with two points, matching New Zealand, who lead the table with a superior run rate.

Rohit Sharma and his team will face traditional rivals Pakistan in their upcoming match on Sunday at the same venue. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will compete against New Zealand in Rawalpindi next week.
