Mumbai, Feb 20 (NationPress) “Challenging times help you learn in life,” states Jarmanpreet Singh, the bronze medalist from the Paris Olympics, as he navigated through the fluctuations of his journey.
The 2024 Arjuna Award recipient shared insights into his challenges, ascent to prominence, and notable achievements in recent years, including the recently held Hockey India League (HIL), during his appearance on the House of Glory podcast, an initiative by the Gagan Narang Sports Foundation.
At just 19 years old, Jarman encountered a significant hurdle in 2015 when he failed a dope test due to medication prescribed for back pain, resulting in a two-year suspension from the sport. Nevertheless, he remained dedicated and committed to his training, ultimately making a remarkable return.
“It was a very difficult chapter in my life. However, looking back, I perceive that incident positively as I've been graced with success. Only through challenging times can one truly learn in life. My family stood by me, and while two years might appear brief, it felt like an eternity. They encouraged me to persist with hockey and resume play once the ban concluded,” expressed the Amritsar native.
“During those two years of inactivity, my younger brother, who played hockey in Jalandhar then, continuously supported me in training with him and his peers,” he added.
Through his resilient spirit, Jarman not only returned to the sport but also contributed to the Indian hockey team clinching the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games and a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His remarkable contributions were acknowledged by the Indian government, leading him to receive the 2024 Arjuna Award.
Discussing his motivational mindset, Jarman stated, “When others doubt your intentions, it instills in you a desire to prove them wrong. Setting personal goals is crucial, and even in adversity, one must rise again to pursue success. Therefore, having a target while exercising patience is vital. Both patience and hard work are essential for achievement.”
The 28-year-old expressed admiration for the recently concluded Hockey India League, which made its return to stadiums after a seven-year hiatus, showcasing numerous national and international stars.
“The Hockey India League is a fantastic initiative as it provides opportunities for emerging players to compete. Junior players can now participate alongside veterans, which is invaluable. Concurrently, senior players gain insights into the strategies and mindsets of international teams,” said Jarman.
