Brisbane, Feb 8 (NationPress) Emerging Australian talent Sam Konstas has confessed that he was “caught in the moment” during his memorable Test debut against India, marking his return to Shield cricket on Saturday.

The 19-year-old left the cricketing community amazed with a bold 60 runs against a strong Indian bowling lineup, facing the likes of Jasprit Bumrah. However, after accumulating just 53 runs in his subsequent three innings, selectors decided to return him to domestic cricket for further experience, elevating Travis Head to open for the tour to Sri Lanka.

In a conversation with the Sydney Morning Herald, Konstas recognized that the thrill of playing at iconic venues such as the MCG and SCG affected his performance.

“I feel like for me, I just love the game and I got caught in the moment – definitely,” Konstas expressed. “It was my first time playing in front of large crowds, and I felt the emotions took hold of me a bit, and hopefully, if I find myself in that situation again, I can manage it better.”

Now, Konstas is set to make his debut at the Gabba during the Shield match against Queensland, which he views as a vital chance to hone his abilities.

“This will be my first experience at the Gabba, and hopefully, (NSW) we can build some momentum and reach the final,” he told CODE Sports.

Although he will miss the Sri Lanka tour, Konstas remains hopeful for his future and appreciates the insights gained from seasoned teammates like Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Usman Khawaja.

While he has yet to adapt to spin-friendly conditions, the Gabba's typically bouncy and fast pitch will present new challenges for him as an opener against Queensland.

His NSW captain, Jack Edwards, endorsed the selectors’ choice to send him back to Shield cricket, stressing the significance of on-field experience.

“For Sam to go (to Sri Lanka) and still gain insights from those practice conditions will be fantastic for him… (and) despite not having played on the subcontinent, he also hasn’t had a chance at the Gabba,” Edwards remarked.

“He’s set to be in the Test squad for years to come, and he will play a lot of cricket (at the Gabba).

“Typically, in Shield cricket, you encounter greener wickets with a bit more grass, so it’s going to be a solid challenge. The Bulls also feature a potent bowling attack, making this experience invaluable for him.”

Edwards highlighted that Konstas was keen to make runs, but had to bide his time after NSW won the toss and chose to bowl first.

“Whenever I’ve watched him play, he always strives to score as many runs as possible,” the NSW captain stated. “It’s great to have him back with us. He’s coming off a successful Test summer, and his enthusiasm and personality uplift the group.”

“We have a relatively young team. He has many close friends here. He’s not one to shy away, so I’m sure he’ll integrate back smoothly, and I hope he can score plenty of runs for us.”

Konstas will encounter a formidable challenge against a Queensland bowling attack spearheaded by Michael Neser, who claimed 10 wickets in the state’s initial two Shield matches before suffering a hamstring injury while competing for Australia A against India A.
