Shillong, Feb 11 (NationPress) The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has declared Meghalaya as the venue for the 39th edition of the National Games scheduled for early 2027. This announcement marks a historic milestone for Meghalaya and the NorthEast region, as it will be the second time they host the National Games, following Assam.
The IOA communicated its decision to the state government through an official letter on Tuesday. The timing of the event will align with the 55th anniversary of Meghalaya’s statehood.
In the letter, signed by IOA President P.T. Usha, addressed to Conrad K. Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the state's dedication to promoting sports and its ability to host such a significant multi-sport event was commended, as stated by the Department of Sports in a Tuesday release.
A delegation from Meghalaya is set to travel to Uttarakhand, the current host of the ongoing 38th National Games, to accept the Games flag during the closing ceremony on February 14. This group will include the Chief Minister, the Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, members of the Department of Sports, representatives from the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, alongside athletes and coaches from all regions of the state.
Upon hearing the news, the Chief Minister expressed, “The National Games are a representation of the Nation’s ambition towards sporting excellence. They foster role models and narratives of resilience that motivate others. It’s a privilege for Meghalaya to host the event and allow our youth to experience the thrill of the Games!”
The Minister in charge of Sports and Youth Affairs also expressed his excitement regarding the announcement, stating, “Meghalaya has made notable progress in its sports landscape lately and is now poised to be recognized among the nation’s sporting giants. We eagerly await the arrival of athletes and fans to showcase what our state has to offer!”
The 39th National Games were initially slated for 2022 but faced delays due to the pandemic and scheduling adjustments from other host states.
In the meantime, the state has been enhancing its sports framework, investing in sports infrastructure throughout Meghalaya, and nurturing local talent. This announcement follows Meghalaya's successful campaign in the National Games, where its athletes secured five medals in Uttarakhand, as reported in the release.
Meghalaya has commenced preparations for the upcoming event in partnership with the MSOA, identifying nearly 40 sports for consideration.
Moreover, the state will host events across its three primary cities: Shillong, Tura, and Jowai. Approximately 12,000 athletes are expected to partake in the Games.
The prominent venues such as the J.N. Sports Complex, the P.A. Sangma Sports Complex, and the Wahiajer Stadium will be utilized during the Games, along with other facilities like the Mawdiangdiang Sports Complex and the Integrated Hospitality and Sports Complex, which will be ready as confirmed in the release.
