Kolkata, Feb 1 (NationPress) Subhasish Bose and Manvir Singh each netted a brace as Mohun Bagan Super Giant displayed an impressive performance, overpowering city rivals Mohammedan SC with a score of 4-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krinangan on Saturday.
Subhasish Bose found the net in the 12th and 43rd minutes, while Manvir Singh contributed with goals in the 20th and 53rd minutes, effectively dismantling the Mohammedan SC defense. This victory propelled the Mariners a remarkable 10 points ahead at the top of the table, bringing their total to 43 points compared to second-placed FC Goa with 33 points. Additionally, this match marked Vishal Kaith's 50th clean sheet in the ISL, making him the first goalkeeper to achieve this milestone.
The Mariners commenced the game with flair and energy, consistently pressuring the Mohammedan SC defense from the outset. They broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with a corner kick from Liston Colaco.
While Mohammedan SC initially defended well, Jamie Maclaren skillfully held the ball before passing it to Dippendu Biswas, whose effort was intercepted, but Subhasish was perfectly positioned to slot it past Padam Chhetri, marking his fifth goal of the season—more than he scored in all previous seasons combined. Manvir Singh doubled the Mariners' lead in the 20th minute with a well-placed header from a corner taken by Jason Cummings.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant nearly scored again when Cummings, showcasing his creativity, made a run down the left wing and squared it to Maclaren, but Florent Ogier made a crucial interception. Following a water break, Carlos Franca made significant runs, but the Mariners' defense held firm.
However, the Mariners struck again in the 43rd minute, with Cummings delivering a free-kick that Maclaren deftly set up for Subhasish, who slotted it home for a 3-0 lead.
Mohammedan SC's best opportunity of the first half fell to Manvir Singh Saini from a corner by Mirjalol Kasimov, but his header was tipped over by Vishal Kaith. Things worsened for the hosts when Kasimov received a red card for a foul on Tom Aldred just before half-time.
The second half began with Alexis Gomez nearly scoring from a free-kick, and Cummings almost capitalized on a rebound, but it was eventually cleared. Manvir scored his second in the 53rd minute, heading home from another excellent cross by Cummings, bringing the score to 4-0.
Later, Jose Molina introduced Dimitrios Petratos and Abhishek Suryavanshi, substituting Manvir and Sahal Abdul Samad. As the game progressed, the Mariners maintained control, with Cummings central to their attacks. In the 74th minute, Petratos attempted a shot after receiving a great pass from Liston Colaco, but Padam saved it, and Maclaren couldn't convert the rebound due to Ogier's block.
Despite numerous opportunities, the Mariners couldn't add to their tally but secured their 13th win of the season, marking their 11th clean sheet.
Mohammedan SC will face Hyderabad FC on February 8, while Mohun Bagan SG takes on Punjab FC on February 5.
