Kuala Lumpur, Feb 2 (NationPress) After guiding India to victory in the 2025 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup at the Bayuemas Oval, captain Niki Prasad expressed pride in the team's commitment to delivering dominating performances throughout the tournament, successfully defending their title with an impressive unbeaten streak.
On Sunday, a remarkable bowling display, highlighted by spinners claiming nine wickets – including three from Trisha Gongadi – and a strong fielding effort, enabled India to restrict South Africa to just 82 runs on a sluggish pitch.
Niki’s strategic bowling changes played a crucial role in preventing the South African team from establishing any rhythm. During the chase of 83 runs, Trisha scored an essential 44 not out from 33 deliveries, while vice-captain Sanika Chalke contributed an unbeaten 26 off 22 balls, leading India to victory in just 11.2 overs, securing the title once again after their 2023 win in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
“We all worked to remain calm and focused. We aimed to execute our roles effectively. Had we won the toss, we might have chosen to bat first. Our goal was clear: to perform. The credit really goes to our support staff for their role in this achievement and for nurturing the younger players. The BCCI has provided us with excellent facilities.
“I feel incredibly happy to ensure that India remains at the top. Competing in the World Cup and achieving this for India is a significant moment. At the tournament's outset, I stated that we were here to dominate and maintain India’s supremacy. We aim to build a legacy of winning ICC trophies and bringing honor to India,” Niki remarked after the match.
She also commended South Africa, who were making their debut in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup final. “The South African team played exceptionally well. They challenged us vigorously today. We have faced them frequently, and their character is commendable; it’s great to compete against them.”
South Africa’s captain, Kayla Reyneke, expressed the difficulty of not being able to take the trophy home and pledged to strive for success in the next U19 World Cup in 2027.
“There are a lot of feelings within the team, but I won’t diminish what our team and management have accomplished. We’ve put in tremendous effort for this moment. While it’s disappointing not to bring home the trophy, reaching our first-ever final is a proud milestone for us.
“Cricket is a team sport, and we could not have reached this point without the support of our teammates and management. This experience motivates us to return stronger in 2027. Mum, dad - I may not bring home the trophy, but I do have my medallion.”
