Jerusalem, April 25 (NationPress) An Israeli tank operator was fatally shot by sniper fire in the Gaza Strip, as reported by the Israeli military.

The soldier, part of the 79th Battalion of the "Machatz" Armored Brigade, was killed during combat in northern Gaza, as stated by the military on Thursday, which also confirmed that his family had been informed of his passing, according to Xinhua news agency.

The identity of the deceased soldier has not been released for public knowledge.

Additionally, an officer from the Yahalom Unit and a reservist from the same battalion sustained severe injuries during the incident and were transported to a hospital, as mentioned in the statement.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Eyal Zamir, warned that Israel would intensify its military operations in Gaza if Hamas fails to release the outstanding hostages soon.

"If we do not observe progress regarding the return of the hostages shortly, we will broaden our operations to a more intense and significant level," Zamir stated during a visit to Gaza, where he interacted with ground forces and conducted a situation assessment with commanders, as per another military statement.

Israeli officials report that 59 hostages remain in Gaza, including 58 of the 251 taken by Hamas during its assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The IDF has confirmed that at least 35 hostages still held are believed to be deceased.

This tragic incident occurred close to an attack on Saturday when Hamas operatives targeted an unarmored army vehicle, seriously wounding three soldiers, before planting a bomb in the area which resulted in the death of one soldier and left another severely injured.

According to military statistics, at least 805 soldiers have lost their lives and 5,427 others have been wounded since the onset of the Gaza war last year.

Israel has engaged in a military conflict in the Gaza Strip following a Hamas attack last year, resulting in over 44,200 fatalities, primarily among women and children, and injuring more than 104,700.

This conflict has also spread to Lebanon, with Israel conducting deadly strikes throughout the nation as tensions escalated from a year-long series of cross-border confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah since the commencement of the Gaza war.
