New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) During a celebratory firing event at a wedding in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district, a woman sustained gunshot wounds and subsequently passed away in a hospital, as confirmed by officials on Friday.
The tragic occurrence took place on Thursday evening in Pirakpur Khapura village, during the wedding ceremony of Barati Lal’s daughter. The groom’s procession was anticipated to arrive from Beniapur village, situated within the Hargaon police station area.
Unfortunately, calamity struck when, as per the victim’s relatives, a man named Annu Yadav from Lucknow discharged a celebratory shot, critically injuring Janaki Devi, a 50-year-old woman and the spouse of Munnalal from Ichha village, within the Tambour police station area.
The festive wedding atmosphere swiftly transformed into sorrow even before the arrival of the groom's party. Following the incident, a substantial police presence was dispatched to the location, and an investigation commenced.
Amid the pandemonium, panic spread throughout the gathering after the gunfire rang out. Authorities were quickly notified, and Janaki Devi was hurried to the nearest Community Health Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Satish Kumar, the victim’s grandson, recounted the dreadful moment: "Annu Yadav lifted the rifle while seated, having it slung over his shoulder. It was only later that we understood my grandmother had been shot. The wedding became a nightmare."
Prakash Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police (North), provided official insights: "On the night of February 20, around 9 p.m., Laharpur SHO was informed about a celebratory firing incident in Khapura village. A guest from Lucknow, identified as Annu alias Anand Yadav, fired a shot from his licensed rifle, which struck a female relative of the bride’s family. She was transported to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries during treatment," he stated.
"Initial investigations have revealed that Annu Yadav was accompanied by three associates at the wedding. He discharged the shot, resulting in the woman's demise. A case has been filed following the family’s complaint. The accused, along with his three accomplices and the firearm used in the incident, has been apprehended. Further investigations are ongoing," added Prakash Kumar.
