Mumbai, March 14 (NationPress) Kaveri Kapur, daughter of Shekhar Kapur, shared the most outrageous thing she has done during Holi, her culinary preferences, and the essential rituals she adheres to for the vibrant festivities.
From playful childhood shenanigans to memorable family traditions, Kaveri reflects on how Holi influences her memories every year.
When asked about her wildest Holi experience, Kaveri recounted a remarkable childhood adventure. She told IANS, “I've always been a bit of a Holi rebel. My best friend and I once devised an elaborate plan to convince everyone we were 'allergic' to colors! We even hid behind our building during the celebrations, leading to a massive search party. In hindsight, my connection with Holi has always been... complex! But when I do join in, it's always with my childhood pals—they're the only ones I trust with my color-averse tendencies!”
On the topic of food, Kaveri openly expressed her love for her favorite cuisine.
“Sushi! I’m completely obsessed with it—the ideal combination of artistry and taste. Now I'm pondering whether I can create Holi-themed sushi rolls? Rainbow-colored rice with wasabi gulal? Perhaps I’ve just invented something unique! But genuinely, good sushi is my weakness, any day of the year,” she said.
Regarding her cooking during Holi, Kaveri stays modest. “I wish I could claim to have perfected some secret family recipe for gujiya or thandai, but my culinary skills for Holi are non-existent!” she said with a grin. Yet, while the kitchen isn’t her domain, Kaveri excels at appreciating the culinary efforts of others. “I’m fantastic at valuing other people's Holi cooking. Maybe this year I’ll actually attempt to make something... or more realistically, I’ll just be the designated taste-tester!”
Kaveri’s pre-Holi preparation is amusing yet notably effective.
She shared, “I essentially transform into an oil slick! I start with a generous coat of coconut oil in my hair and almond oil on my skin—it’s my beauty secret for easy color removal while keeping my skin hydrated.” She meticulously oils every inch before the celebrations, ensuring her skin and hair are ready for the upcoming fun. “Another constant in my Holi rituals is always wearing white. There’s a certain aesthetic joy in seeing my white clothes act as a canvas when colors are thrown at me. That’s half the enjoyment of this festival!”
Reflecting on her memories of Holika Dahan, Kaveri mentioned, “Some of my fondest childhood memories come from Holika Dahan nights! We would gather around the bonfire, and the elders would narrate the story of Prahlad and the victory of good over evil. There’s something so captivating about watching the flames flicker against the night sky. We’d circle the fire, offer prayers, and share prasad together. Although I’ve missed a few while living abroad, whenever I’m in India, attending Holika Dahan and celebrating Holi the next day is a must.”
