Beirut, March 4 (NationPress) Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have reiterated their commitment to bolstering Arab cooperation and aligning their stances on crucial regional and global matters in a joint statement, according to the Lebanese official National News Agency (NNA) on Tuesday.
The statement, released after a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Monday, emphasized both parties’ dedication to the complete implementation of the Taif Agreement, adherence to pertinent international resolutions, the extension of state sovereignty throughout all Lebanese territory, and the exclusive possession of arms by the Lebanese state.
The Taif Agreement, brokered in Saudi Arabia in 1989 and ratified later that year, concluded a 15-year civil war in Lebanon and reaffirmed the Lebanese government’s authority in the southern region.
Both Lebanon and Saudi Arabia underscored the national significance of the Lebanese Army and the necessity of bolstering its capabilities while advocating for the full withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from all Lebanese territories, as stated in the joint announcement, as reported by Xinhua.
A ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon, effective since November 27, 2024, mandates an Israeli military exit from Lebanese land. Nevertheless, Israel retains a presence in five locations along the border despite a deadline set for February 18.
Additionally, the NNA noted that during the discussions between Aoun and the Crown Prince, both sides explored avenues for enhancing cooperation and agreed to evaluate obstacles obstructing the revival of Lebanese exports to Saudi Arabia, as well as consider measures to ease travel for Saudi citizens to Lebanon.
Aoun extended an invitation to the Crown Prince to visit Lebanon, which was met with gratitude and a favorable response, according to the NNA.
