Washington, Jan 24 (NationPress) The US Senate has officially confirmed John Ratcliffe, the former Director of National Intelligence (DNI), to take on the role of the next Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director under President Donald Trump.

The Senate voted 74-25 on Thursday to endorse Ratcliffe's nomination, who had served as Trump's DNI for the last eight months of his initial term, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

In a statement, the White House announced via a post on X, "@JohnRatcliffe's confirmation as Director of the CIA signifies a major advancement in President Trump's strategy to bolster America's influence globally."

While serving as DNI, Ratcliffe spearheaded a transformation in the US Intelligence Community's focus to achieve a significant strategic edge over China and oversaw various operations aimed at eliminating designated terrorist leaders.

Director Ratcliffe also made a groundbreaking decision to prioritize space as an intelligence domain by incorporating the US Space Force as the 18th member of the US Intelligence Community. He was awarded the National Security Medal, the highest accolade for notable contributions in intelligence and national security, according to the White House.

As a former Congressman, Ratcliffe played a pivotal role in shaping national security policies while serving on the House Intelligence, Homeland Security, and Judiciary committees.

He was previously a US House representative for Texas's 4th congressional district from 2015 to 2020.

Notably, twenty-one Democrats joined their Republican counterparts in backing Ratcliffe's nomination, showcasing bipartisan support amidst a politically divided atmosphere.

The vote occurred three days after the Senate unanimously confirmed Florida's US Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, marking it as the second significant appointment for the new administration.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has scheduled votes for additional nominees from Trump, including Pete Hegseth, nominated for Secretary of Defense. Hegseth has faced scrutiny over his lack of military leadership experience, alongside allegations of alcohol abuse, sexual assault, and mismanagement of organizations he has led.

Thune criticized Democrats for obstructing Trump's nominees, urging for swift votes on these matters.

Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and to confirm a presidential nomination, only a simple majority is required, allowing Republicans to lose a maximum of two votes if all Democrats oppose the nomination.
