Aizawl/Guwahati, March 4 (NationPress) Mizoram's Aizawl is set to become the fourth capital city in the northeastern region to gain a railway connection within the next five months, as the Bairabi-Sairang new line project approaches completion, officials reported on Tuesday.

According to railway authorities, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is in the process of constructing a new 51.38 km broad gauge line linking Bairabi, located near Assam’s Hailakandi district, with Sairang, close to Aizawl, at an investment exceeding Rs 8,210 crore.

For many years, the main city of Guwahati in Assam (adjacent to the capital Dispur), Agartala (the capital of Tripura), and Naharlagun (near Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh) have already been integrated into the railway network.

NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma mentioned on Tuesday that NFR General Manager of Construction, Arun Kumar Chaudhary, recently inspected the progress of the ongoing Bairabi–Sairang project.

Chaudhury, accompanied by senior officials from the NFR headquarters at Maligaon near Guwahati, evaluated various aspects of the new line project, including the construction of Kawnpui and Mualkhang stations, the yard at Sairang, as well as bridge and tunnelling works.

Sharma noted that the Bairabi-Sairang railway line project, which connects Aizawl in Mizoram to the rest of India, is nearing its completion.

This new line project is divided into four segments: Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang. The segment from Bairabi to Hortoki was inaugurated in July of the previous year.

The NFR is making every effort to ensure the project is commissioned as soon as possible, the CPRO added.

Moreover, the CPRO stated that Chaudhary also carried out a window trailing inspection on Monday from Sabroom (southern Tripura) to the Agartala station. The Sabroom railway station is the southernmost station adjacent to the border with Bangladesh. The General Manager visited the Sabroom land port, which plays a crucial role in boosting logistics, enhancing bilateral trade, and creating economic opportunities for both nations. He also engaged with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha in Agartala to discuss the progress of various railway infrastructure development projects in the state.
