Bengaluru, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has strongly criticized Congress leaders for their remarks against Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot regarding his refusal to endorse the Ordinance aimed at controlling microfinancing institutions (MFIs) that are allegedly exploiting farmers. Instead of making irresponsible comments, they should prioritize managing their respective departments.
The Agriculture Minister, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, had remarked that despite holding a Constitutional position, Governor Gehlot behaves as if he is a spokesperson for the BJP.
He urged that the Governor should remain politically neutral concerning the Ordinance intended to safeguard the people from MFIs' coercive actions.
The Governor declined to approve the Karnataka Micro Loan and Small Loan (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Ordinance, 2025.
In response, the Opposition Leader in the Legislative Assembly, R. Ashoka, admonished Minister Cheluvarayaswamy for his remarks towards the Governor, highlighting that “over 3,000 farmers have taken their own lives in the past 20 months since the Congress took charge, yet there is no action from your side.”
“The Governor correctly pointed out that the current legal framework is sufficient to regulate microfinance companies. What is wrong with that? If you have issues with the Governor’s comments, you ought to communicate with him directly instead of launching baseless political attacks,” Ashoka stated.
“The public is quite aware of how Governors functioned during the Congress regime at the Centre. Instead of indulging in pointless rhetoric and squandering time, you should focus on effectively managing your department. Address the farmers' challenges and carry out your responsibilities sincerely to regain the voters' trust,” he asserted.
“Rather than making thoughtless remarks to the media, concentrate on managing your department. Are you even aware of your department's functions, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy? You appear to be confused about aligning with either CM Siddaramaiah’s faction or Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar’s,” Ashoka claimed.
“Given your uncertainty about your position in case of a Cabinet reshuffle or a change in leadership, it’s understandable that you have lost sight of your duties,” he criticized.
“Farmers are suffering and being pushed to suicide due to the harassment from microfinance companies. Instead of addressing their plight, you haven’t even shown the decency to visit the affected families in your own district. Recently, I visited the home of one Prema and her son Ranjith, who sadly took their lives in Konnapura village, Malavalli taluk, Mandya district. I extended my condolences and provided financial aid of Rs 1 lakh. Only after this did you finally acknowledge the issue,” Ashoka emphasized.
