Chandigarh, Dec 22 (NationPress) On Sunday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with the Army commenced their operations for the second consecutive day, as numerous individuals were thought to be trapped under the wreckage of a four-storey building that fell in Mohali, Punjab.
On Sunday, one male body was recovered, as confirmed by Subdivisional Magistrate Damandeep Kaur, who identified the victim as Abhishek Dhanwal from Ambala.
A tragic loss occurred earlier when a 20-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh died in the incident on Saturday.
NDRF officials reported that individuals were buried beneath the debris when a gym structure collapsed, which was attributed to excavation activities in a neighbouring building’s basement within Sector 77.
A senior police official informed the media that debris from two floors has been cleared. They received reports of two individuals missing but vowed to persist with the rescue and search operations, as stated by Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Pareek.
Drishti Verma, a 20-year-old from Theog in Shimla district, was rescued but later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital, according to Viraj S. Tidke, the officiating Deputy Commissioner.
The building owners, Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh, have been charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
An Army column equipped with specialist engineering tools has been deployed for the rescue operation since 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Western Command acknowledged the swift response of the Army in the rescue efforts.
In a commendable display of teamwork, the Army units, along with the NDRF and state rescue teams, have been unceasingly working to manage the crisis. The Engineer Task Force with debris clearance machinery is actively engaged at the scene.
Efforts are underway to clear the top debris and reach the basement.
Upon receiving reports of the disaster in the evening, district officials promptly arrived at the scene and initiated rescue operations with local assistance and support from various departments.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pareek was among the first responders who took action to commence rescue operations.
Tidke noted that the district administration notified the NDRF based in Pinjore and also informed the Western Command of the Army to bolster the rescue efforts.
The district administration is committed to making every possible effort to save all individuals trapped in the debris.
All necessary equipment and machinery have been mobilized for the operation.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has communicated with district officials regarding the ongoing rescue operations and has instructed them to exert maximum effort to save the victims. Also present at the site on Saturday were Member of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang and local MLA Kulwant Singh, who were overseeing the rescue operation.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav assessed the rescue efforts and mandated local police to ensure the safety of the victims at all costs.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain stated that rescue operations would persist until all victims are safely returned, assigning duty magistrates Tehsildar Arjun Singh Grewal and Navpreet Singh Shergill to assist the rescue teams and police.
