Chandigarh, Feb 21 (NationPress) In a significant crackdown on trans-border smuggling operations, the police of the Amritsar Commissionerate apprehended four individuals involved in drug trafficking and confiscated 5.06 kg of heroin from them during two distinct incidents, as reported by Punjab's Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, on Friday.

The suspects have been named as Gurjant Singh, also known as Kalu, hailing from Bachiwind village in Amritsar, Jagjit Singh from Rania village in Amritsar, Sahil Kumar, known as Sahil, from Ghariyala village in Tarn Taran, and Rinku from Basti Dune Wali in Guru Har Sahai, Ferozepur.

DGP Yadav mentioned that the apprehended suspects were allegedly in contact with drug traffickers based in Pakistan, who utilized drones for smuggling narcotics across the border for further distribution in various regions of Amritsar.

Two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed under applicable sections of the NDPS Act at the Cantonment and Sadar police stations in Amritsar, he added.

The DGP noted that additional arrests and seizures are anticipated in the days ahead.

Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, provided insights into the operation, stating that police teams from the Cantonment Police Station, under the direction of DCP Harpreet Singh Mander, executed a special operation based on reliable intelligence, leading to the capture of Gurjant Kalu and Jagjit Singh in the Mahal bypass area, with 3.067 kg of heroin recovered from them.

Furthermore, police teams from CIA Staff-1, led by Inspector Amolakdeep Singh, apprehended two additional suspects, Sahil Kumar and Rinku, following further inquiries and interrogation of the previously arrested individuals, resulting in the recovery of another 2 kg of heroin.

Bhullar also revealed that preliminary investigations suggest that the accused Rinku is operating a large hawala network to facilitate the transfer of illicit funds generated from drug trafficking to various suppliers. Ongoing investigations are in progress.
