New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) A radar imaging satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has transmitted images of the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela taking place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
These images, acquired by the advanced optical satellites and all-weather capable RISAT-1A radar system, managed by ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) in Hyderabad, reveal the extensive infrastructure being established for the Mahakumbh.
The visuals depict the arrangement of various structures and roads, alongside a multitude of pontoon bridges spanning the river network.
According to Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director of the NRSC, the radarsat was employed because it could capture images despite the cloud cover that has enveloped Prayagraj.
The local administration in Uttar Pradesh is reportedly leveraging these images to enhance safety and prevent disasters during the mela.
Images taken by the radarsat were captured leading up to the Mahakumbh, starting with significant developments observed on December 22, 2024, and as the massive crowd began to gather on January 10, 2025.
“These advanced technologies mark a significant shift in the management of large-scale religious events. The Mahakumbh Mela is a prime example of how technology and tradition can unite for a cleaner, healthier future,” stated Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh.
The Mahakumbh 2025, occurring after a 12-year interval, is a spiritual gathering expected to attract over 450 million devotees globally. The event is set to run until February 26.
During the Mahakumbh 2025, millions of devotees are anticipated to flood into the sacred city of Prayagraj for a ritualistic dip, believed to cleanse them of sins.
On Makar Sankranti alone, approximately 1.60 crore devotees are estimated to have taken a holy dip at the Sangam by noon, heralding a grand commencement to the Mahakumbh 2025 festivities.
