Bhopal, March 13 (NationPress) At least seven individuals lost their lives and three others sustained severe injuries in a tragic road incident that unfolded late Wednesday night on the newly constructed Badnawar-Ujjain four-lane road under the jurisdiction of Badnawar police station in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district.
Authorities confirmed six deaths, although unverified reports indicate that a critically injured person may have also passed away.
In a brief phone conversation with IANS, Amit Kushwaha, the officer in charge of Badnawar Police Station, stated that the tanker, which was traveling on the incorrect side of the road, initially collided with a pickup truck before crashing into a car that was following closely behind.
The tanker was heading towards Ujjain, while the other vehicles were approaching it from the opposite direction.
The occurrence took place around 11 p.m., according to the officer. Four individuals died at the scene, while others suffered serious injuries and were promptly transported to Badnawar Civil Hospital.
The total death toll is still under verification as one person was critically injured and reportedly succumbed to their injuries, but this has not been confirmed.
The officer elaborated that the injured were admitted to the hospital, with all three in critical condition. However, he refrained from providing additional details as the police team was preoccupied with extricating and arranging transportation for the injured from the wreckage of the vehicles.
According to other police sources, two individuals trapped in the wreckage of the car and pickup were eventually rescued with the assistance of a crane. The driver of the tanker fled the scene immediately after the crash, they noted.
Authorities have initiated a search for him.
The deceased, as per reports, hailed from Mandsaur, within the area of Sitamau police station. They were reportedly returning to Mandsaur from Indore via Ujjain.
Police have moved the mangled vehicles and the victims' remains to Badnawar Civil Hospital. The post-mortem examination is scheduled for the morning.
Identification of the victims remains challenging due to the severity of the accident, as the pickup was lodged beneath the tanker, complicating immediate identification efforts by the police. According to other police sources, one passenger in the pickup died instantly, while another was rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, three of the four occupants in the car died on the spot, and one injured person was hospitalized.
Police investigations are ongoing to identify the victims and track down the fleeing tanker driver.
