Itanagar, Jan 24 (NationPress) A significant wildfire ignited near the Tawang Chu river in the Lungla Sub-Division of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, endangering nearby villages. Fortunately, it has been largely controlled thus far thanks to the rapid response from local authorities and Army personnel, as reported by an official, who confirmed that there were no injuries or fatalities.

A representative from the Forest Department indicated that while the fire was successfully managed in proximity to residential areas, it persisted in the dense forest due to the challenging terrain.

The wildfire initially erupted in the river region of Tawang Chu River, close to Sagkyur village, within the Pamakhar Circle of Lungla Sub-Division earlier that day.

The flames spread rapidly, posing a considerable threat to Sagkyur and surrounding communities.

Tawang Chu (or Tawang river) is the primary river in the Tawang district.

This river is fed by two tributaries from Tibet before it flows into Bhutan and Assam.

The official noted that prompt action by the Lungla administration, in conjunction with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indian Army units from the Tawang Brigade, state police, and local residents, successfully contained the fire near Sagkyur village and residential structures, averting potential loss of life and property.

However, the wildfire in the adjacent forest persisted due to the steep, rugged mountains and thick, inaccessible woods,” the official stated.

He added that the SSB, Army, police, and other agencies are on high alert to manage the fire.

Acting Additional Deputy Commissioner of Lungla, Ama Nungnu Mara, along with District Disaster Management Officer of Tawang, Genden Tsomu, are spearheading the coordination and containment efforts on-site.

Senior officials from the Indian Army, state police, SSB, Border Road Organisation, and the Forest Department are closely monitoring the situation and are actively engaged in efforts to control the blaze.

The district administration has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any further incidents or developments to the authorities without delay. Villagers are encouraged to prioritize their safety and cooperate with the response teams to ensure prompt action.
