New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Former captain Shahid Afridi asserts that India possesses a greater number of match-winners compared to Pakistan as they gear up for the eagerly awaited Champions Trophy Group A match scheduled for this Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

Historically, Pakistan has triumphed over India in three out of five encounters within past Champions Trophy tournaments, with victories recorded in 2004 in the UK, 2009 in South Africa, and during the 2017 final at The Oval in London.

“When discussing match-winners, I would argue that India has a superior lineup compared to Pakistan. A true match-winner is one who can clinch the game independently. Currently, we lack such talents in Pakistan. The strength of India lies in its middle and lower order, which has been pivotal in securing victories,” Afridi commented.

He added, “For a considerable period, we have been providing chances to players, yet none have consistently risen to the occasion. A few may have shown promise in certain matches, but we lack players who can maintain their form over an extended period or across numerous games.”

“This is where we fall short compared to India, which excels in this domain. However, the secret to defeating India rests in collective performance—whether it’s the batsmen, bowlers, or spinners—every contribution is vital,” Afridi stated on JioHotstar.

Responding to Afridi, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh suggested, “I believe Pakistan has an edge because of their familiarity with Dubai. They have played a considerable amount of cricket there and have a solid understanding of the conditions. On slower pitches, both Indian and Pakistani players excel in spin.”

“Regarding match-winners—yes, I concur with Shahid Afridi that we have a greater number. However, I contend that a single player from Pakistan can still turn the game around.”

“The contest between India and Pakistan transcends match-winners; it is about seizing the moment, adjusting to the situation, and not succumbing to pressure. The team that manages this aspect more effectively will secure victory for their nation,” he elaborated.

Defending champions Pakistan commenced their Champions Trophy journey with a disappointing 60-run defeat against New Zealand, while India celebrated a convincing 6-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Thursday.

Afridi emphasized that captain Mohammad Rizwan needs to set a strong example, especially following Pakistan's recent loss to New Zealand. “As captain, it’s crucial for Rizwan to lead by example. His performance in each game, along with his attitude and leadership, is of utmost importance.”

“Captaincy brings a mix of accolades and scrutiny. Rizwan's performance is vital, as he is the cohesive force within the team. He treats all players equally, is a tenacious fighter, and his energetic presence on the field is inspiring. I have witnessed him rise to the occasion in significant matches, and I trust he will steer the team effectively.”

Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq believes that for Pakistan to gain an advantage, they should target the experienced Indian pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. “There’s no denying that all Indian players are skilled, but Virat and Rohit are exceptional. Their consistent performances over nearly two decades have significantly impacted the team.”

“If they are dismissed early, it will greatly influence the morale in India’s dressing room, while boosting Pakistan’s spirits. That said, the other Indian players are immensely talented, but they are still evolving.”

“Conversely, when Babar Azam is dismissed for Pakistan, it uplifts the opposition bowlers and increases the pressure on Pakistan’s dressing room. For Pakistan to prevail, both the lower and middle order must perform. If India loses both Rohit and Virat early, Pakistan can gain an upper hand,” he concluded.
