New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) Experienced batter Faf du Plessis has been named as the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals for the forthcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team announced this exciting news via their social media platforms on Monday.
“You mean right now? I'm at home, where else would I be? Yes, that's true, I'm vice captain of DC and I'm very excited. Delhi's been great, the boys have been fantastic, definitely feel happy and I feel ready,” du Plessis expressed in a video shared by the franchise.
The Delhi franchise acquired du Plessis at a base price of Rs 2 crore during last year's mega auction in Jeddah, after he was released by his former team - Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) - prior to the auction.
This appointment signifies that the Proteas batter will be a key player in DC’s starting eleven, assisting captain Axar Patel in crucial decision-making both on the field and off it. Du Plessis, who previously captained South Africa in international cricket, led RCB throughout the IPL seasons 2022-2024.
As RCB's captain, du Plessis managed the team in 42 matches, securing 21 victories and suffering 21 defeats, resulting in a win-loss ratio of 1.000. Under his leadership, the team reached the playoffs twice, but fell short in the Eliminator on both occasions. Over the past five years, du Plessis has accumulated 2,718 runs across 74 IPL innings.
Du Plessis and Axar will collaborate in their leadership roles alongside a revamped coaching staff at DC, which includes Hemang Badani (head coach), Venugopal Rao (director of cricket), Munaf Patel (bowling coach), Matthew Mott (assistant coach), Kevin Pietersen (mentor), Gnaneswara Rao, and Anton Roux (fielding coaches).
DC will kick off their IPL 2025 journey by hosting Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24. Notably, DC is one of three teams, along with Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, that have yet to secure an IPL title.
