Ranchi, Jan 11 (NationPress) A transformative moment for women's hockey in India is on the horizon as the Delhi SG Pipers prepare to face the Odisha Warriors in the inaugural match of the first-ever women's Hockey India League this Sunday.

The Delhi SG Pipers have put together a formidable women's squad for this four-team competition, led by India international and national vice-captain Navneet Kaur. With a blend of both youth and experience, the team aims to kick off their campaign on a high note.

As the tournament gears up in Ranchi, Navneet stated, "The HIL will be immensely beneficial for the players. It will provide younger athletes in India with invaluable experience that will ease their transition into the national team in the future, as they'll understand what it takes to compete at the international level."

"This is a fantastic platform for women's hockey. Previously, the men's league has been held, and those participants gained significant experience. We anticipate similar benefits from this league," she added.

The Delhi SG Pipers are under the guidance of coach Dave Smolenaars, who is also the analytical coach for the national women's team. A FIH Grade 1 coach, Smolenaars led the Netherlands' junior women's national team to consecutive world titles.

Discussing the league's launch and its implications for women's hockey, Smolenaars remarked, "The Hockey India League opens up a world of opportunities for younger players, which is incredibly exciting. It allows them to learn from diverse cultures, enhancing their growth not just as athletes but as individuals."

On the team dynamics, Smolenaars shared, "The atmosphere within the team is excellent, and the girls are bonding well. We have several dynamic players capable of making a substantial impact both defensively and offensively. Our focus is on achieving the right balance between our attacking strengths while maintaining a solid defense. I'm confident that our team can perform to the best of our abilities."

In addition to Navneet, the Delhi SG Pipers feature skilled Indian players like Sunelita Toppo, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, and Mumtaz.

With talents such as Deepika, Navneet, Sunelita, Sangita, Preeti Dubey, and Great Britain's Charlotte Watson in their lineup, the Delhi SG Pipers boast significant offensive potential.

The team has three exceptional goalkeepers, including India's number two Bichu Devi Kharibam, Bansari Solanki, and Belgium's Elodie Picard.

Defensively, they will be supported by the seasoned Stephanie De Groof from the Netherlands, along with Emma Puvrez from Belgium, Australia's Miri Maroney, and Great Britain's Elizabeth Ann Neal.

Two-time Olympic medallist Lily Owsley will be crucial in the midfield for the Delhi SG Pipers, alongside players like Manisha Chauhan.

Following their match against the Odisha Warriors, the Delhi SG Pipers will face off against the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers on January 14.
