Taipei, Feb 22 (NationPress) During her address at the closing ceremony of the Halifax International Security Forum 2025 held in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim underscored the nation’s steadfast commitment to self-defense and called upon allies and like-minded nations to champion global peace and prosperity. "Taiwan is essential for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region," she stated.
In her remarks on Friday, Hsiao highlighted China's recurrent violations of Taiwan's airspace and the ongoing cyber assaults aimed at Taiwan. She noted that Taiwan has implemented a targeted strategy to counter the threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party and its military, as reported by the prominent Taiwanese newspaper, Taipei Times.
On the preceding Thursday, President Lai Ching-te marked the opening of the 2025 Halifax Taipei forum. In his speech, President Lai expressed gratitude to the Halifax International Security Forum for their unwavering support for Taiwan and for selecting Taiwan as the inaugural venue outside North America for such a forum.
Recognizing that Taiwan is navigating a complicated global scenario, President Lai urged the international community to take decisive action.
"Taiwan occupies a critical position on the first island chain, directly confronting an authoritarian threat. However, we will not be cowed. We will remain resolute in protecting our national sovereignty, preserving our free and democratic lifestyle, and ensuring peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," he asserted.
"Taiwan values peace, but we are not under any illusions about it. We will embody the spirit of peace through strength, taking tangible steps to fortify Taiwan and support the free and democratic community," he elaborated.
President Lai also expressed appreciation to the global community for their continued focus on the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
Recently, US President Donald Trump and Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru released a joint statement reaffirming their strong support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and for Taiwan's involvement in international affairs, a press release from President Lai's office indicated.
"Let me make one thing abundantly clear: America does not recognize China’s claim over Taiwan. Once again, the Chinese government has attempted to deceive the world and undermine the United Nations for its own ends - but we are aware of these malignant tactics and stand in solidarity with our friends in Taiwan," stated Jim Risch, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on X this Friday.
The Halifax International Security Forum, convened annually in Canada, serves as a significant gathering for nations that value freedom worldwide.
Van Praagh, President of the Halifax International Security Forum, remarked during the meeting, "While the security challenges ahead are far too great for any single nation to tackle alone, there is no problem that cannot be addressed when the world’s democracies unite."
