High Tensions as Kerala Catholic Priests Protest and are Removed by Police
Kochi, Jan 11 (NationPress) A significant escalation occurred on Saturday in the ongoing disputes within the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, as police intervened to remove protesting priests near the bishop’s residence.

Kochi, Jan 11 (NationPress) The ongoing disputes surrounding the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly in Kerala escalated dramatically on Saturday when police forcibly removed protesting priests outside the bishop's residence.

At least 21 priests participated in the protest, which lasted for three days, demanding the reinstatement of four suspended priests and the revocation of controversial documents issued by the diocesan administration.

The priests gathered outside the bishop's house in Angamaly, expressing their dissent against decisions regarding the celebration of the liturgy.

Tensions heightened as law enforcement intervened to disperse the crowd, with several priests being carried away amid chaotic scenes. Many lay supporters of the priests also assembled, leading to a heated confrontation. The situation deteriorated when attempts were made to forcefully open the gates of the bishop’s residence, resulting in verbal disputes that briefly turned violent.

Currently, efforts are underway to resolve the deadlock. Supporters of the priests, who were removed by police, reported that the priests have declined to take bail and are willing to face imprisonment in protest.

A meeting aimed at reconciliation, involving representatives of the protesters, Church officials, and Ernakulam district authorities, is being organized to alleviate the tension. Reports indicate that Bishop Bosco Puthur, the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese, may be replaced as part of attempts to restore peace.

While the immediate conflict has calmed, the atmosphere remains charged. Similar disputes have arisen sporadically over recent years, highlighting profound divisions within the community.

At the core of this controversy is the celebration of the liturgy—a fundamental component of Catholic worship, encompassing rites, prayers, and sacraments that commemorate the Paschal Mystery—the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.

This particular dispute originated in 2021 when the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church mandated a uniform approach to celebrating the liturgy. According to this directive, priests are to face the congregation during the Liturgy of the Word, turn towards the altar during the Eucharistic prayers, and then face the congregation again after communion.

While most dioceses have embraced this practice, the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly—the largest Syro-Malabar jurisdiction—has resisted this change. Clergy and laity in this area argue that maintaining eye contact with the congregation throughout the Mass aligns more closely with the liturgical reforms instituted by the Second Vatican Council (1962–65).

As the standoff persists, this dispute underscores the broader challenges of reconciling tradition and reform within the Syro-Malabar Church.
