Wayanad (Kerala), Feb 22 (NationPress) A collective of over 20 artists convened for a wall mural painting initiative in Wayanad, Kerala, aimed at disseminating vital information regarding disaster preparedness for both humans and animals.

The participants from various regions of Kerala collaborated to create dynamic wall paintings, depicting essential disaster preparedness protocols.

These murals emphasized significant practices such as assembling emergency medical kits for animals beforehand, ensuring animals are untied during crises, recognizing evacuation routes, and executing other preventive strategies.

The event drew involvement from local residents, school children, and community members, who interacted with the artwork and its message on disaster readiness.

Nayana Scaria, the Coordinator for disaster response and relief at Humane World for Animals India, noted that utilizing art as an educational tool is among the most engaging and effective methods to raise awareness.

"Through this mural painting initiative, we aim to not only draw attention but also offer a powerful visual reminder to the community about the significance of proactive disaster management and preparedness. By uniting volunteers from across the state, the program not only promoted community consciousness but also actively involved youth by offering them valuable learning and volunteering experiences in disaster preparedness," Scaria expressed.

For the past seven years, Humane World for Animals India has established its presence in Kerala through its disaster response, preparedness, and relief initiatives.

The landslides in Wayanad in 2024 prompted a major animal rescue operation by their team, assisting over 200 animals and demonstrating their dedication to animal welfare during emergencies.

Together with partner organizations, Humane World for Animals India is working toward transforming Wayanad into a disaster-resilient district for both humans and animals.

As part of this initiative, flood preparedness training sessions have been conducted for communities and self-help groups like Kudumbashree to protect animals and the families reliant on them during disasters like floods and landslides.

Through these actions, the animal welfare organization aims to enhance resilience in disaster-prone regions by bolstering the capabilities of communities, local authorities, and grassroots humanitarian entities.

The three-day event was organized by Humane World for Animals India (formerly known as Humane Society International/India) in partnership with NGO Fireflies and supported by the Wayanad District Disaster Management Authority and the Animal Husbandry Department.
