Chennai, Feb 11 (NationPress) A substantial presence of police has been arranged at the six principal shrines of Lord Murugan in Tamil Nadu as millions of devotees gather to honor the significant Thaipusam festival.
The revered warrior deity of South India, Lord Murugan, is worshipped at six sacred temples collectively known as Arupadai Veedu. These temples include Thiruchendur, Pazhamudhir Solai, Thirupparamkundram, Palani, Swamimalai, and Tiruttani.
Due to the overwhelming number of devotees attending these temples for Thaipusam, security measures by the Tamil Nadu police have been significantly enhanced.
In Palani, approximately 3,000 police officers have been stationed, while over 4,000 officers are deployed at Thirupparamkundram, particularly following recent tensions regarding non-vegetarian food consumption near the temple hills. Security is also bolstered at Thiruchendur and Swamimalai, with 2,000 police personnel assigned to manage the large crowds of devotees.
At Tiruttani and Pazhamudhir Solai, 1,500 police personnel are present to maintain safety and ensure that Thaipusam, a deeply revered festival honoring Lord Murugan, is celebrated with utmost devotion.
This festival features prayers, kavadi (offerings), and various spiritual rituals. The Pusam Nakshathram associated with Thaipusam began on February 10 at 6:01 PM and concludes at 6:34 PM on February 11, 2025. This sacred occasion is viewed as a time for spiritual cleansing, penance, and self-reflection.
Devotees aspire for Lord Murugan's blessings for guidance, protection, and strength. The festival serves as a poignant reminder that good ultimately prevails over evil, underscoring the principles of sacrifice, devotion, and endurance.
In Palani, thousands of devotees carrying kavadis are permitted to ascend the hill in groups via the Elephant Path, while a separate staircase is designated for those descending to maintain order.
Numerous arrangements have been made for devotees, including free food distribution (Annadanam) along temple pathways, medical camps established at the foothills, temporary vehicle parking, drinking water stations, and sanitation facilities to accommodate the vast crowd. To avoid overcrowding, darshan tickets have been halted for three days.
Additionally, authorities have removed encroachments along the Giri Valam path, frequently used by devotees for circumambulation.
Political leaders and notable figures in Tamil Nadu have extended their greetings for Thaipusam.
AIADMK General Secretary and Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) shared on social media: "On this auspicious day, Tamils globally pray to Lord Murugan for his divine blessings and protection. May their lives thrive, may their efforts succeed, and may they achieve victory after victory."
K. Annamalai, President of Tamil Nadu BJP, also conveyed his wishes, stating: "I wish all Tamils a joyful Thaipusam. May Lord Murugan’s grace bring joy, peace, and prosperity to Tamil Nadu. May he lead us in the victory of Dharma over injustice and eliminate the darkness surrounding us."
Famed Tamil actor and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, shared a message: "On this sacred Thaipusam, let us unite to honor Lord Murugan, the eternal guardian of Tamil lands. He watches over us from every hill with kindness. We humbly offer our prayers to this unique and divine protector of Tamils worldwide."
