Stavanger (Norway), Jan 21 (NationPress) Norway Chess has officially confirmed the participation of renowned American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, currently holding the title of World No. 3, for the upcoming Norway Chess 2025. This marks Nakamura's seventh appearance in this prestigious event, where his thrilling gameplay and competitive nature have earned him a significant fanbase.
The forthcoming tournament promises fierce competition as the youngest World Champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, prepares to face off against the top three players globally. Additionally, India's top player Arjun Erigaisi and China's leading player Wei Yi will be making their debuts at Norway Chess. Scheduled to take place in Stavanger, Norway from May 26 to June 6, 2025, the event will feature an impressive lineup, including World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana, World No. 3 Hikaru Nakamura, World No. 4 Arjun Erigaisi, World No. 5 Gukesh D, and World No. 9 Wei Yi.
The organizers stated, "This tournament boasts one of the strongest line-ups ever, with four players exceeding a rating of 2800. The average rating among participants is 2795, which is just five rating points shy of the highest-rated tournament we held, Norway Chess in 2017."
With a FIDE rating of 2802, Nakamura is a five-time champion of the U.S. Chess Championships, the current FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Champion, and claimed the title of Norway Chess Champion in 2023. Beyond competitive play, he has gained a vast following as a chess streamer, sharing his expertise and games with chess enthusiasts worldwide. His influence, both in-person and online, continues to motivate both chess players and fans alike.
Expressing his eagerness to return to Norway Chess, Nakamura remarked on the camaraderie and challenges the event provides. “What excites me the most about returning to Norway Chess is the opportunity to reconnect with all the familiar faces I've come to know over the past decade of this event, as well as competing against emerging talents in chess like Gukesh and Arjun,” Nakamura was quoted in the official release.
When asked about the competitor he looks forward to facing, Nakamura responded, “I am particularly eager to play against Wei Yi because I have faced him only once or twice, while I'm quite familiar with the styles of the other competitors.”
Nakamura's return also reignites one of chess's most celebrated rivalries. Magnus Carlsen, often regarded as one of the greatest players in history, has frequently acknowledged Nakamura as one of his most formidable opponents.
Kjell Madland, founder and tournament director of Norway Chess, welcomed Nakamura's participation, stating, “Hikaru is among the elite players globally, bringing a wonderful blend of talent and enthusiasm to the tournament. He possesses the ability to engage with fans, and we are thrilled to have him back for 2025.”
