Sydney, Jan 3 (NationPress) Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting believes that the journey for Rohit Sharma to return to Test cricket will be quite lengthy and challenging after the regular Indian captain decided to take a break from the ongoing fifth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

In the three Tests he played against Australia, Rohit managed an average of just 6.2, with a top score of 10. Speculation regarding his absence in Sydney arose when head coach Gautam Gambhir did not guarantee him a place in the lineup during the pre-match press conference.

After leading India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, Rohit has already stepped away from T20 internationals. “The general sentiment has been that this outcome was anticipated. Over the last few days, discussions indicated that Rohit was unlikely to participate in this match, paving the way for Shubman Gill to return, and it seems (Jasprit) Bumrah is set to take up the captaincy once again,” Ponting noted.

“It seems like a considerable challenge for Rohit Sharma to make a comeback in this format. India’s next Test isn’t scheduled until mid or late June, which is quite a stretch, especially for someone nearing the end of their career,” he added.

“Rohit has been an exceptional player for India. For athletes of his caliber, we wish them the best and hope to see them back on the field, but as I mentioned, the road back for him will likely be long and challenging,” Ponting expressed during the ICC Review show at the SCG.

Ponting also reflected on the terminology used regarding Rohit's decision not to play in the Sydney Test. “I was quite taken aback by the phrase ‘opting out’ being associated with such a pivotal match. He has been a significant figure in Indian cricket for many years.”

“Given the gravity of the situation, with the necessity to win this match to retain the trophy, it was surprising for one of their more seasoned players to step back at such a crucial moment,” Ponting concluded.
