Liverpool, Jan 22 (NationPress) Mohamed Salah has elevated his goalscoring record for Liverpool in European tournaments to 50 following a 2-1 victory over Lille in the Champions League.
The Egyptian superstar celebrated reaching this milestone by scoring the opening goal at Anfield on Tuesday night. Salah, who holds the title of the club's all-time leading scorer in European competitions, achieved this landmark by converting a Curtis Jones assist in the 34th minute.
This goal marks his 45th in the elite European tournament, coming in just 73 appearances. Additionally, Salah accumulated five goals from his nine matches in the Europa League last season.
With this achievement, he has now surpassed the previous record holder, Steven Gerrard, by nine European goals.
In an interview with Amazon Prime Video, Salah expressed his feelings about reaching this milestone, stating: "Hopefully (I'm) not the last one but it's something I'm very happy and proud about – and especially because we won the game, that’s the most important thing."
Furthermore, Liverpool also established a new club record for the longest duration without conceding a goal in European matches.
A total of 599 minutes passed between Christian Pulisic scoring against Liverpool for AC Milan on matchday one and Jonathan David finding the net for Lille at Anfield.
Following Pulisic's early goal at San Siro in September, Arne Slot's side rebounded to secure a 3-1 victory, then maintained clean sheets against Bologna, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, and Girona.
This impressive run surpasses the previous record of 572 minutes without conceding, set by Liverpool under Rafael Benitez during the 2005-06 season.
With their victory over Lille, Liverpool secured a top-eight finish in the Champions League group stage, guaranteeing an automatic spot in the last 16.
