New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) Congress leader Pramod Tiwari on Monday labeled the unfortunate stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj as the "greatest tragedy of this century."

Addressing reporters outside the Parliament, Tiwari demanded accountability from the government and criticized the lack of transparency concerning the identities of those who perished and the absence of an official victim list.

With evident frustration, Tiwari remarked on the government's 'indifference', asserting, "We are witnessing families approaching us in tears, yet there’s been no official announcement of the names or images of the victims. Have we become so numb that we can’t even discuss the stampede and the deceased in Parliament?"

He further accused the administration of trying to downplay the tragedy by concealing the death toll and obstructing a comprehensive investigation.

The Congress leader reiterated that the stampede is the "greatest tragedy of this century."

“This is the most catastrophic incident of our era, yet the largest institution in the nation remains silent. If no voices are raised in Parliament, is the government attempting to sweep it under the rug? It’s apparent that they are intentionally hiding the number of victims, obscuring their identities, and trying to suppress this tragedy so that the public can forget. We will continue our fight for justice, and we won’t cease until the truth is uncovered,” he concluded.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav also made shocking allegations regarding the Maha Kumbh stampede, claiming that the actual death toll far exceeds the official count of 30 fatalities.

He asserted that thousands of individuals lost their lives during the stampede that occurred during the Amrit Snan on the significant day of Mauni Amavasya and accused the Yogi Adityanath-led government of deliberately downplaying the crisis.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament, the SP representative made several serious allegations against the state government, claiming that many bodies were disposed of along the riverbanks while others were submerged in the Ganga to obscure the true number of deaths.

He emphasized that the real death count is significantly higher than reported, referencing firsthand accounts from numerous witnesses.

"Maha Kumbh mein hazaron log mare gaye, kuch Ganga mein baha diye gaye aur kuch daba diye gaye" (Thousands lost their lives during Maha Kumbh, some bodies were thrown into the Ganga while others were buried along the banks), he stated, contesting the official death toll of 30.
