Khartoum, Feb 1 (NationPress) More than 45 civilians lost their lives and 82 others sustained injuries in a shelling incident carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a busy market in Omdurman, situated north of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, as reported by a volunteer organization and a medical source.

“The RSF militia has perpetrated a new massacre today (Saturday) through a targeted attack on the Sabreen Market in the Karari locality,” stated the Al-Thawra Resistance Committee, a volunteer group.

“Currently, we have confirmed 45 civilian fatalities and 82 injuries,” the statement continued, lacking further specifics.

A medical representative from Al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman noted, “The hospital has received over 24 deceased individuals, alongside numerous injured patients.”

“The circumstances are dire in every conceivable way. We urgently need blood donors and medical supplies,” the source informed Xinhua news agency.

The shelling specifically targeted the Sabreen Market, a significant hub for local residents in the Karari locality, located in the northern section of Omdurman.

The attack also impacted nearby residential zones, potentially increasing the casualty figures beyond those currently reported.

No official announcement has been made, and the RSF has yet to respond to the incident.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) frequently accuse the RSF of conducting bombardments in the Karari locality from their positions in Bahri, a city within Khartoum State.

Karari is the only area in Omdurman that remains densely populated and is fully under the control of the army.

Recent military skirmishes between the SAF and the RSF have escalated in Khartoum.

Recently, the SAF has achieved significant advancements in Khartoum State, reopening its position along the Bahri city axis and reclaiming several regions, though the East Nile area of the city remains a strategic stronghold for the RSF.

Additionally, the SAF is executing ground operations aimed at dismantling RSF control in the Umbada area west of Omdurman, while the RSF continues to dominate the southern sections of Khartoum.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a severe conflict between the SAF and the RSF, leading to the deaths of at least 29,683 individuals and displacing over 15 million people, either within Sudan or fleeing abroad, as per the latest estimates from international organizations.
