Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) Following the sentencing of Sanjay Roy, the lone defendant in the rape and murder case of a female doctor, to life imprisonment by a special court in Kolkata on Monday, the BJP has called for an investigation into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the former Kolkata Police Commissioner.

In the wake of the verdict regarding the notorious case involving a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, which occurred in August last year, Amit Malviya, the chief of the BJP's Information Technology Cell and the party's Central Observer for West Bengal, urged an inquiry into the actions of Mamata Banerjee and Vineet Kumar Goyal.

Immediately after the ruling was delivered, Malviya released a statement indicating that the decision should be contested.

He remarked that the penalty of life imprisonment along with a monetary fine imposed on Roy amounts to a travesty of justice.

“This verdict must be appealed. Mamata Banerjee ought to cease protecting the offender. Investigative agencies must also scrutinize the involvement of the former Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Chief Minister regarding evidence tampering. Justice must not only be served but must also be perceived as served,” Malviya asserted in his statement.

Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP's state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, expressed concern regarding the potential tampering with evidence that may have transpired during the five days the Kolkata Police handled the investigation before it was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The populace of West Bengal is generally dissatisfied with the sentence. The CBI should promptly appeal the verdict at the Calcutta High Court while uncovering the primary conspirators behind the crime,” Majumdar stated.

Rajendra Gupta, a member of the Sealdah Court's Bar Association in Kolkata, criticized the CBI report, claiming it lacked accuracy.

“This report is designed to exonerate everyone involved. The true perpetrator remains at large; it’s a setup. The CBI has produced this report under external influence,” Gupta told IANS.

Earlier in the day, Mamata Banerjee expressed her discontent regarding the sentence given to Roy.

“We sought the death penalty for the convict. I am uncertain how… had this case been under our jurisdiction (state police or Kolkata Police), the death penalty would have been declared much sooner,” Mamata Banerjee remarked to reporters immediately following the court's decision.
