Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata has sentenced Sanjay Roy, the only accused in the heinous rape and murder of a woman doctor, to life imprisonment. Following this ruling, his attorney indicated plans to contest the decision in the Calcutta High Court.

The victim, a doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, was brutally raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August of the previous year.

Interestingly, the remarks made by the convict’s lawyer, Sejuti Chakraborty, contradicted the statement from Roy's elder sister on January 18, who insisted that the family would accept any sentence given to him and would refrain from pursuing further legal action.

Upon the conviction of Roy for his grievous crimes of rape and murder, his sister expressed that since the law had deemed her brother guilty, he must face appropriate punishment.

“We extend our apologies to the victim's family. The law has determined my brother's guilt, and he will face consequences. I have no further comments. The authorities will act justly, irrespective of our wishes,” Roy's elder sister conveyed on Saturday.

Throughout the day, the convict’s mother remained silent and inaccessible, confined within their home in South Kolkata.

However, diverging from the claims made by his sister, Chakraborty affirmed that every convict possesses the right to appeal a ruling, and she intends to challenge the special court’s verdict.

“We may require some time to file the appeal. However, I genuinely believe that Sanjay is a victim in this situation. Therefore, we will seek the higher court's intervention to secure his release,” Chakraborty stated on Monday afternoon after the sentencing.

The conflicting statements from the victim’s family and the convict’s counsel raise uncertainties about who will bear the legal costs associated with appealing to a higher court.
