Prime Minister Modi to Unveil Mission Mausam on Tuesday, Enhancing India's Climate Preparedness
New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Mission Mausam in honor of the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday, as stated by the Prime Minister's Office.

New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to unveil ‘Mission Mausam’ tomorrow, coinciding with the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department, according to an announcement from the Prime Minister's Office on Monday.

Mission Mausam is designed to transform India into a ‘weather-ready and climate-smart’ nation by implementing advanced weather surveillance technologies and systems.

As per the Prime Minister's Office, “PM Narendra Modi will engage in the festivities marking the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department on January 14th at approximately 10:30 AM, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He will also address attendees during the event.”

Implementing high-resolution atmospheric observations, next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computing is central to Mission Mausam.

Additionally, the mission will enhance the comprehension of weather and climate dynamics, providing air quality data to facilitate strategic weather management and long-term interventions.

This initiative received approval from the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in September 2024. Its goal is to bolster India’s scientific endeavors related to weather and climate, enhance research and services, and empower stakeholders—including citizens and last-mile users—in addressing extreme weather incidents and the repercussions of climate change.

With a budget allocation of Rs 2,000 crore over a two-year period, this ambitious program will primarily be executed by the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.

Mission Mausam is expected to yield significant advantages across multiple sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, defense, environment, aviation, water resources, power, tourism, shipping, transport, energy, and health. The initiative will also promote data-driven decision-making in urban planning, transportation infrastructure, offshore operations, and environmental monitoring.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister is also anticipated to unveil the IMD Vision-2047 document, which focuses on weather resilience and strategies for climate change adaptation, encompassing plans for weather forecasting, management, and mitigation.

In celebration of the 150th Foundation Day of the IMD, a variety of events, activities, and workshops have been organized to highlight the IMD's accomplishments over the past 150 years, its contribution to making India more climate-resilient, and to showcase the role of government institutions in providing various weather and climate services.
